Dick Carmichael

Dick Carmichael sent the following in response to the questionnaire sent out for our 45th reunion.

WHO ARE YOU NOW?

1. What unusual or important event has happened to you since you turned 50 or 60?

I became a member of an air show flying team known as the Falcon Flight Formation Flying Team. We perform at about 10-12 air shows a year. We fly experimental aircraft known as RVs. Much fun!

2. Have you done anything exciting you have always wanted to do but for whatever reason you were holding back? For example; Have you started a new or unusual business, found a new hobby, or taken a trip somewhere you have always wanted to visit?

I built the aircraft I fly (RV8A)from a kit and obtained FAA certification in 2001. It is a fast, highly maneuverable aircraft and is a joy to fly.

3. What do you plan to do in the next five or ten years?

Enjoy being involved with my son, John Austin Carmichael, and his activities and flying a few air shows each year.

4. In this second or third chapter of your life, what have you done for someone else? Have you given something back?

I serve as Chairman of the Airport Committee and as assistant coach to boys football and baseball programs which my son is involved in each year.

5. What is the best thing about your career?

The best thing about my first career is that I retired from it. It had been good to me but was getting old. Now I am a home builder and I work when I want to. I can now spend lots of time with my son.

6. What kind of philanthropic projects do you enjoy the most?

Not much I guess, unless having my 90 year old mother live with us is considered such.

7. Have you received awards or honors over the years? If so, what are they?

Only business promotions and associated awards.

8. What is the most fun thing you have done this decade?

Living in Brussels, Belgium for 4 years representing an American Telecommunications company in Europe or perhaps being an air show pilot.

9. How are you different from the kid we knew in 1962?

Likely not much different.

10. Served in the military? Like to share any of those experiences?

I served and wish I could again to help our brave service men and women who are trying to save our country from the democrats.

11. Further Education

Received a BS in Criminal Justice with Minor in Psychology at UTA (Class of 1974).

On another note: What funny thing happened in high school with a friend or teacher(s) that you are no longer embarrassed to share some 45 years later?

I vaguely remember some AHS seniors visiting Six Flags Over Texas one night a couple of weeks before the “official” opening in 1962. Hard to remember that far back though!!
